about
The title track and first single from The Garrys' fourth album, 'Get Thee to a Nunnery', available September 24, 2021 on Grey Records.
On lead track “Get Thee to a Nunnery”, The Garrys playfully explore the push-pull of rebellion and redemption that comes within a religious upbringing, and the seeding of persistent guilt that all former Catholic school kids know well. The album and this track in particular were inspired by stories from the band’s mother of her teenage years at an all-girls boarding school and convent in small-town 1960’s Saskatchewan. Even for artists as reverentially nostalgic as The Garrys, it’s impossible to avoid grappling with the tensions that arise from their sources of aesthetic inspiration. On one hand, they look upon this era as timelessly cool, and coloured with a sepia-toned innocence; on the other, they know the truth of it was inescapably oppressive to young women and various Others.
The song starts with an organ intro that could be spilling straight from the cathedral doors, before a cigarette-flicking guitar riff and a sauntering rhythm takes the track into an assertive bad-girl strut. With tongue firmly in-cheek, the lyrics admonish the wayward behaviour of a child who has been breaking her poor mama’s heart, and insist that salvation will come through the rote choreography of religiosity — although The Garrys’ disaffected delivery suggests they aren’t totally convinced. With a sassy mod-pop attitude, the sisters’ signature layered harmonies, and the use of percussive backup vocal echos, there is a real “Chick Habit” vibe to the track.

lyrics
Baby you’ve been bad, so bad
Baby you’ve been bad bad bad bad, so bad
Girl you’d better pray, before they put you away
Girl you’d better pray pray pray pray, before they put you away
You’re breaking your mama’s heart, baby
They hardly even know you lately
Could you straighten out now maybe?
Gotta get thee to a nunnery
Father, son, and holy ghost
Get in line and take the host
Father, son, and holy ghost ghost ghost ghost
They’re the ones you need the most
Holy holy water
Holy wine
Baby drink it up up up up
Cross the sign

Lots of great music, and includes our cover of "Dusty Boy" by The Peelies. More importantly, all sales support the Saskatoon Sexual Assault & Information Centre! <3 The Garrys

It has depth and range. I had only heard the title track on a radio show and was surprised by the rest of the record. I thought it was going to be kind of rockabilly but they are doing their own thing and its sophisticated and beautiful. _eyeam_good11

Sweet, retro rock. Encapsulates the 60s sound perfectly. Festive, chill; acid dancer. Fun to listen to, great to vibe off of, move your body to, or just relax with. Every song on this album is a hit. Dancing album for sure... I saw them live, same kind of fun! ebookreader
